Florida has more than 100,000 new cases of cancer each year — second only to California in terms of new cancer diagnoses. In North Central Florida alone, 4,500 people are diagnosed with cancer annually. Now, patients seek at Shands at the University of Florida have access to a new, state-of-the-art facility. University of Florida faculty offer patients a multidisciplinary approach to care and a full range of cancer-related services at the UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital complex. These include:

The large, private patient rooms have windows with remote controlled shades that enable patients to easily adjust the light. There are 192 private inpatient rooms.

Patient rooms have home-like features such as softly colored walls, muted lighting, sleeper sofas to encourage family overnight stays and remote-controlled window shades that reveal some of the best views in Gainesville, including the Garden of Hope. The bathrooms meet ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) specifications for easy access.

Flat-screen televisions, DVD players and wireless Internet access also are included. Dining is available at a deli cafeteria. There is spacious indoor seating as well as an outdoor terrace that overlooks the Garden of Hope.

All surgical services for oncology patients, from the preoperative unit to the post-anesthesia care unit, are centrally located on the second floor. This floor features a bright and spacious glass-enclosed atrium overlooking the peaceful S. Clark Butler Lake in the Garden of Hope.

Every operating room is equipped with the latest surgical technology including state-of-the-art lighting, endoscopic equipment and high-definition monitors to display X-rays, vital signs and echocardiogram results. In addition, two interventional radiology suites are located in this complex for surgical procedures requiring radiologic guidance and/or catheterization.
