Nationally recognized gastrointestinal oncologist George Kim, M.D., joins UF Health Cancer Center

The University of Florida Health Cancer Center is pleased to announce that George Kim, M.D., a nationally recognized expert in gastrointestinal cancers, has joined the center. He will serve as medical director of the UF Health Cancer Center’s Clinical Research Office and a professor in the division of hematology and oncology in the UF College of Medicine.

Kim is an accomplished medical oncologist and clinical investigator who most recently served as director of the Gastrointestinal Cancers Program at the George Washington University Cancer Center. Before that, he worked as a medical oncologist both at 21st Century Oncology and the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. 

Kim earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and a fellowship in medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute. Kim has additional work experience at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He is board certified in medical oncology and a member of several professional societies, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology. 

Kim is experienced in all facets of basic, translational and clinical cancer research, and he has won numerous awards for research excellence. His research interests include gastrointestinal malignancies, experimental therapeutics and quality improvement. He has also served as principal investigator on several clinical trials for gastrointestinal cancers. 

In addition, he has published more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and written several book chapters in the Handbook of Clinical Oncology. 

At the UF Health Cancer Center, Kim will be part of the Cancer Targeting and Therapeutics research program, as well as the Gastrointestinal Disease Site Group. He will focus on developing new therapeutics for colorectal cancer, supporting the conduct of innovative clinical trials for patients with malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract, mentoring new clinical investigators and working to increase operational efficiencies and communications with the center’s external community physicians and referring partners.
