Alexi Hernandez Alvarez, a second-year Master of Public Health student in the University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions with a concentration in population health management, has been selected for the UF Health Cancer Center’s Cancer Policy Internship.
During his spring 2024 internship in Washington D.C., Hernandez Alvarez will intern with Rep. Darren Soto. He will have an opportunity to directly impact health care policy by tracking legislative activity, attending hearings, drafting hearing reports and legislative updates, and attending higher education and coalition meetings. In addition, he will work on a primary project throughout the internship and present a policy brief on his work.
“The internship combines two things I love: politics and health policy, specifically focusing on cancer policy,” Hernandez Alvarez said. “This unique blend adds to the excitement, as I’ll be directly working on addressing health issues that affect everyday people.”
Hernandez Alvarez began pursuing his interest in health policy last spring by working in Clayton County, Georgia, to identify various health needs in the area. He designed policies to address that need, specifically tackling Type 2 diabetes and obesity among younger adults.
Congratulations, Alexi!
