Twelve students selected for the 2024-25 University Scholars Program

Twelve exceptional University of Florida students have been selected for the 2024-25 cohort of the UF Health Cancer Center’s University Scholars Program.

The students represent four colleges across the University of Florida and will engage in cancer research projects spanning the center’s four research programs.

The University Scholars Program is a fall-spring semester opportunity for UF undergraduates to gain experience and technical skills in cancer research. Throughout the two-semester program, students complete individual research projects and attend seminars. Scholars are also mentored by Cancer Center graduate students and postdoctoral trainees, who host activities and monthly seminars for the undergraduates.

At the end of the program, scholars participate in a research symposium and give an oral presentation on their research projects. The program helps to encourage and educate the next generation of health professionals in cancer, from basic to translational research in cancer prevention, diagnostics, epidemiology, and therapeutics.

“Having seen the impact that a cancer diagnosis can have on both the family and individual suffering firsthand, the prospect of being able to participate in the contribution of scientific knowledge that could give families hope is inspiring,” said Jacyln Shaw, a biochemistry major who was selected for the 2024-25 cohort. “I believe that being a member of the University Scholars Program is a way to contribute knowledge to this growing field.”
