In March 2023, the UF Health Cancer Center’s Cardio-Oncology Working Group hosted the inaugural Cardio-Oncology Symposium, bringing together UF researchers to foster a collaborative environment with the goal of spurring new projects and grant applications in this multidisciplinary field.
Now, the research and proceedings from the symposium have been published as part of a special issue in the American Heart Journal Plus: Cardiology Research and Practice.
The main topics discussed at the symposium, held at the Cancer and Genetics Research Complex, were racial/ethnic disparities, artificial intelligence, and leading-edge research. Clinical and research faculty and trainees had the opportunity to learn from three external speakers with expertise in cardio-oncology and four internal speakers who focus on cardio-oncology. The symposium also included a poster session, which allowed researchers from six UF colleges to present their research and network.
The new publication includes seven research articles reporting the work of the speakers, as well as one article summarizing the findings presented in the posters.
Thirteen posters were presented by graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty. Topics ranged from basic science research focusing on the mechanisms of cardiotoxicity to translational research focusing on identifying biomarkers for risk stratification to using exercise for cardioprotection from cardiotoxicity, as well as racial and ethnic differences in cardiotoxicity risk.
The symposium was organized by Katelyn Bruno, Ph.D., FHFSA, FACC, an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in the UF College of Medicine, and Yan Gong, Ph.D., an associate professor in the department of pharmacotherapy and translational research in the UF College of Pharmacy and the UF Center for Pharmacogenomics and Precision Medicine, who lead the Cardio-Oncology Working Group.

ADVANCING MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH
Cardio-Oncology Working Group
The mission of the Cardio-Oncology Working Group is to create a unique multidisciplinary group to foster a collaborative environment between researchers and clinicians who are interested in the field of cardio-oncology (cardiotoxicity of anticancer therapies) to improve the outcomes of cancer patients. The group is now planning for a second symposium in spring 2025.
