As cancer survivorship increases, the effect of cancer therapies is leading to a new clinical problem for cancer patients- cardiotoxicity. Cancer therapy cardio-toxicity, or cardio-oncology, focuses on understanding the mechanisms behind why cancer therapies cause cardiac complications/conditions, determining who is at risk of cardio-toxicity, and how to prevent, treat, and reverse cardiac damage. Additionally, the newer aspect of the field of cardio-oncology is “reverse cardio-oncology”, the study of how cardiovascular risk factors or disease can increase the risk of cancer through overlapping mechanisms and risk factors. This presentation will review what cardio-oncology is, what is done clinically in a cardio-oncology clinic, and some of the research being conducted at UF and elsewhere to further increase cancer and cardiovascular disease survivorship.
Dr. Katelyn Bruno is an Assistant Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Co-Chair of the UF Health Cancer Institute Cardio-Oncology Working Group. She is the Director of the Translational Cardio-Immunology Laboratory. She utilizes cell culture, mouse models, and human samples and data to study cardiomyopathies, focusing on myocarditis and cancer therapy cardio-toxicity.
