Pre-Conference Workshops
9 a.m. – noon | Wednesday, June 17

We are excited to announce two new pre-conference workshops this year! These workshops will provide practical tools to conduct these hands-on lab activities in your classrooms.

Registration is required to participate in the workshops and space is limited.

Workshop 1: Using Lasers to Detect & Analyze Cells & Particles

Colorful lasers used during flow cytometry.

Flow cytometry is a widespread technique in the research world. It is a single cell technology capable of measuring multiple fluorescent analytes on thousands of cells per second. To design, run and analyze a successful flow cytometry experiment, a researcher needs to know about the antibodies, fluorescent reagents that are used, how the cytometer works, how to design an experiment, how to prepare samples, and how to analyze them. This workshop will introduce the attendees to some of these aspects, as well as taking part in interactive workstations designed to explain some of these concepts.

  • Workstation 1: Antibody Modeling
  • Workstation 2: Navigating the Laser Maze – Understanding Flow Cytometry through Play
  • Workstation 3: Inside the Core – A Guided Tour of the Flow Cytometry Facility

Workshop 2: Effects of Vaping

This workshop provides multi-level tools and resources suitable for middle and high school teachers to incorporate into their classroom curriculum. The workshop provides presentation slides on vaping prevention and the health risks of vaping, as well as a hands-on lab activity that will allow attendees to observe the effects and impact of vaping.

  • Level UP: Beat the Vape & Tobacco Boss
  • Impact of Vaping: Tetrahymena & Humans
