Objectives

  • Identify the most effective treatments for breast cancer and ways to prevent late-stage diagnosis
  • Share ways to cope with the emotional, physical and other changes that come with breast cancer
  • Learn ways that family members can support their loved cancer survivor
  • Identify ways to support the family members of women with breast cancer
  • Provide the opportunity to learn about and sign up to participate in meaningful cancer prevention and intervention research

Presenters

Lisa R. Spiguel, M.D.

Dr. Spiguel is an associate professor with the University of Florida department of surgery in the division of general surgery’s surgical oncology service. She serves as the section chief of breast surgery in the department of surgery and clinical director of the UF Health Breast Center. Her clinical focus is on the surgical care of breast cancer and benign breast disease, the assessment of high-risk breast cancer patients and overall breast health. She offers the full spectrum of surgical breast care and uses an oncoplastic technique to rearrange breast tissue for a natural form after breast conservation surgery. Dr. Spiguel earned her medical degree at Wayne State University in Detroit and completed her fellowship at the University of Chicago Medical Center in general surgery. Before joining UF, she completed the Lynn Sage Breast Surgery Fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.


Adeline M. Deladisma M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Deladisma is a University of Florida assistant professor of surgery and a board-certified surgeon at UF Health Jacksonville. She also serves as the medical student clerkship director for the department of surgery. Dr. Deladisma received her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. She completed her medical residency in surgery at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, as well as a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland, before joining UF.


Dejana Braithwaite, Ph.D., MSc

Dr. Braithwaite is a professor in the department of surgery in the UF College of Medicine. She is also the UF Health Cancer Center associate director for population cciences and co-leads the Cancer Control and Population Sciences research program. Her research is focused on the intersection of cancer and aging, with the overarching goal of advancing and applying knowledge about aging to cancer population science. The overall goal is to encourage a more individualized approach to cancer screening and care among older adults. She has extensive experience, expertise and leadership in large-scale multidisciplinary NIH-funded efforts of breast and lung cancer screening, risk factors and outcomes. She has performed multiple epidemiologic studies in which she was able to stratify older adults at risk for or diagnosed with cancer into distinct health categories associated with substantially different life expectancies. These studies have been cited by guideline panels, such as the American Cancer Society, the U.S. Preventive Service Taskforce and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.


Jonathan D. Licht, M.D.

Dr. Licht is the director of the UF Health Cancer Center. He joined UF from Northwestern, where he was the division chief of hematology/oncology and the associate director for clinical services for the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center Laurie. He led the UF Health Cancer Center to achieve designation from the National Cancer Institute in 2023.

Dr. Licht is an internationally recognized physician-scientist and expert in epigenetics and aberrant gene regulation as a cause of blood and other cancers. He has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1991 and has authored over 200 original articles, reviews and book chapters and his work has been cited by other researchers more than 26,000 times.
