Nine Cancer Center members honored as chairs

Nine UF Health Cancer Center researchers were formally recognized as endowed chairs and professors in a ceremony on Nov. 16, placing them in the ranks of the most accomplished faculty members in the University of Florida’s six health colleges.

Mobile mammography unit to expand access to care

With a $1.5-million grant awarded through UF President Ben Sasse’s strategic funding initiative, the UF Health Cancer Center will launch a mobile mammography unit outfitted with leading-edge technology to bring services directly to the community. It will be the first of its kind in the region.

Patients' genetic profiles may inform AML treatment

In a new study led by Jatinder Lamba, Ph.D., a multi-gene metric known as ACS10 revealed a close link between genetic factors and racial disparities in pediatric AML outcomes. Researchers say using the metric to optimize treatment approaches for each patient could lead to better outcomes, particularly among Black children. The study, which was featured as part of the press program at the ASH Annual Meeting, was also featured in Precision Medicine Online and the ASCO Post.

The inaugural Southeastern Cancer Survivorship Symposium provided the opportunity to learn more about holistic, patient-centered cancer research, as well as cancer research funding opportunities.

COE spotlight: Partnering for success

On Nov. 18, the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement's clinical community navigator team participated in the last quarterly Children Beyond Our Borders health clinic of 2023 with the UF Mobile Outreach Clinic and Equal Access Clinic. The event featured 3D mobile mammography and assistance applying for vouchers.

Between the various services offered, 101 people received care and over half of those were cancer screening services. Twenty-nine screening mammograms were completed on site. The CCN team worked incredibly hard to ensure that everyone who needed services received them. The team's next event with Children Beyond Our Borders is Jan. 27.

Now with robotic tools at UF Health, physicians can quickly and safely access and biopsy difficult-to-reach nodules in the peripheral lung — where more than 70% of cancer lung nodules are located — streamlining diagnosis and treatment.

Staff spotlight: Xiuyao Song, Ph.D.

Xiuyao Song, Ph.D., is the assistant director of research intelligence at the UF Health Cancer Center. In this role, she leads the center’s research intelligence team, which provides a wide range of application development and data analytics services for researchers. Annual Research Showcase: Jan. 31

Our annual Research Showcase will be Jan. 31 at the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom. This event includes a keynote presentation by Christopher Mason, Ph.D., a judged poster session with prizes for the top trainee posters and three-minute thesis presentations by the Cancer Center Predoctoral Award recipients.
