Mission

The overarching scientific objective of the University of Florida Health Cancer Center (UFHCC) Cancer Population Sciences program (CPS) is to understand and reduce cancer risks and cancer-related burden within the UFHCC catchment area. The UFHCC catchment area comprises 22 counties with high rates of cancer and cancer risk factors, including smoking, among residents who face disadvantages due to race/ethnicity, poverty, rurality, older age and poor health literacy. To address these challenges and to better understand contributors to the burden of cancer, CPS members conduct population-based and cancer control research to understand risk factors for cancer, improve cancer prevention and screening, symptom management, and palliative care and to enhance survivorship for patients. These projects study the biological, psychological and sociological underpinnings of cancer-related symptoms and treatment-related toxicities. Another research focus of the CPS program is assessing (in order to eliminate) cancer-related health disparities. This community-engaged cancer research addresses disparities faced by rural, African-American, low-income and older individuals in the UFHCC catchment area, including low cancer screening rates, advanced stage diagnoses and high mortality. The CPS research is conducted in real world clinical and community settings using novel data science methodologies and tools to determine the effects of interventions delivered in the context within which individuals live and seek care.

Aims

  • Identify and modify risk factors for cancer, increase cancer screening and improve cancer communication. Research in this aim focuses on understanding and reducing cancer risks in the catchment area as well as the development of pragmatic clinical trials to ascertain the best treatments for patients. Facilitated by the One Florida Data Trust, members work on understanding risks for cancers common in the catchment area including pancreatic, breast, prevention of hepatitis C associated malignancy, as well as nicotine addiction and smoking which is higher in our catchment area than the rest of the state and the US. The group studies patient perceptions regarding screening and develops interventions centered on improving communication and patient decision-making in contexts such as HPV vaccine uptake, tobacco reduction and optimizing clinical communication using patient portals. These interventions were developed utilizing principles of community engagement to improve the health literacy and cultural appropriateness and effectiveness of reaching the rural population in our catchment area.
  • Relieve the burden of cancer by ameliorating cancer treatment toxicities, improving cancer symptom management, palliative care and survivorship. This aim focuses on elucidating the mechanisms of cancer cachexia and radiation toxicity. Other studies focus on better understanding of pain and other symptoms, implementing behavioral interventions that integrate with the electronic health record, and improving treatment decision-making and psychosocial adjustment, palliative care and survivorship. These studies include the use of advanced study design and analysis of quantitative data using novel data linkage strategies, tools and methods. This research is conducted in all population groups, including women and children, and emphasizes understanding and reducing cancer health disparities faced by rural, minority, low-income, older adults in our catchment area.

To achieve these aims, the CPS impact primarily aligns with the thematic areas of cancer primary prevention, early detection, health services, and palliative care research. The impact is achieved via cross-cutting: 1) use of innovative technology, strategic message design, and large data science; and 2) enhancement of cultural sensitivity to reduce cancer health disparities. Through the conduct of clinical trials and comparative effectiveness research in real–world settings, CPS members develop, test and assess interventions to reduce treatments toxicities, and improve symptom management, palliative care, and quality of life. CPS members also are developing and testing strategies to link tumor registry, EHR, genomic, vital statistics, census and environmental data to identify factors contributing to disparities in cancer prevention, screening and treatment and to develop interventions to address those factors.

Program Co-Leaders

Diana Wilkie, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN

Diana Wilkie, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN

Diana WilkiePh.D., R.N., FAAN, comes to UF from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she served as professor and Harriet J. Werley Endowed Chair for Nursing Research. She joined UF in 2015.

Dr. Wilkie, a member of the Institute of Medicine, has devoted her research program to management of cancer pain and to end-of-life issues. She has been continuously funded since 1986 from numerous organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation — totaling more than $37 million. She has authored or co-authored more than 154 scholarly publications and serves as a reviewer on a number of journals, including the Journal of Palliative Medicine, Cancer Nursing and the Journal of Pain.

Her clinical work with cancer patients led to the development of a computer-based pain report system that allows a patient to describe his or her pain and generates a report for the clinician with suggestions for appropriate interventions. Wilkie is leading efforts to establish a Center of Excellence in Palliative Care Research housed within the UF College of Nursing.

Currently, Dr. Wilkie is conducting a randomized clinical trial testing the effects of computerized pain tools on pain control for cancer patients receiving hospice care, a study focused on advanced care planning for African Americans with dementia, and two studies focused on improving outcomes for adults with sickle cell disease. The long-term goal of her research is to help clinicians effectively combine pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies for management of acute, chronic and cancer pain.

Janice L. Krieger, Ph.D.

Janice Krieger, Ph.D.

Janice L. Krieger, Ph.D., is a professor in the Advertising Department and serves as Director of the STEM Translational Communication Center in the College of Journalism and Communications. Dr. Krieger has published more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles related to her research expertise in designing, implementing, and evaluating translational communication interventions in health and science contexts. She serves as a PI and co-I on several large grants funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Her research has garnered more than $10 million in grant funding. Dr. Krieger serves on the Editorial Board of Health Communication and the Journal of Health Communication and is chair of the Intergroup Communication Interest Group of the International Communication Association.

Dr. Krieger also co-directs the Recruitment Center at the UF Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. In this role, she promotes research designed to improve awareness, understanding, and informed decision-making about clinical research participation. Dr. Krieger is also the co-director of the Dissemination Core of the UF Patient Centered Outcomes Research Network (PCORNet), where she provides expertise on the effective use of communication in dissemination science activities. She directs an advanced undergraduate research experience course each semester and teaches a doctoral-level seminar on Translational Communication Science each Spring.
